Literary Arts Fest, Miss Cinco de Mayo, and Spring Village Faire

We hope you enjoyed your Easter weekend in San Diego because we have a whole new week’s worth of fun activities for you and your family to enjoy together. Celebrate literature, Mexican culture, and good, old-fashioned family fun this week!

cinco de mayo

Starting Monday, April 25th, and lasting through May 5th, is the 15th Annual Literary Arts Festival at Grossmont College. Enjoy 10 days of celebrating literature with: performances, readings, lectures, workshops, writing competitions, book signings and more, all sponsored by the Creative Writing Program and English Department of Grossmont College. This year, some of the visiting writers and guest performances are being supported by Poets & Writers, Inc. through a grant it received from The James Irvine Foundation, and The Grossmont College Foundation. For a full list of events and more information on the festival, check out their website.

Kick off your Cinco de Mayo celebration a little early with the Miss Cinco de Mayo of Old Town Pageant on Tuesday, April 26th at the Cygnet Theatre in Old Town at 6pm. This runway-style pageant will judge participants on swimsuit, evening gown, and talent, as well as an on-stage interview portion. This year marks the 28th Annual Fiesta Old Town Cinco de Mayo, which is the largest Cinco de Mayo celebration north of the border! This two-day fiesta is free and will take place Saturday April 30th, from 11am-10pm and Sunday, May 1st, from 10am-5pm.

Wind up your week with the largest one-day street fair in California, the Carlsbad Spring Village Faire on Sunday, May 1st. Every year, more than 100,000 visitors come to Carlsbad twice a year for the faire which runs the first Sunday of May and November. The faire features 900 arts and crafts booths, antiques, a Kiwanis Club pancake breakfast, an international food center, children’s rides and a certified Farmer's Market. Best of all... it’s free! So, bring your family out to enjoy bounce houses, obstacle courses, street performers and delicious faire food like kettle corn, fried goodies and international delights. To reach the faire, take Carlsbad Village Drive west from the I-5. Free shuttle bus services will be provided from the Westfield Plaza Camino Real Shopping Mall off the Jefferson exit, south of Highway 78 and the Coaster Station off the Avenida Encinas, Poinsettia exit, west of Interstate 5.
