Dr Seuss, Ice Skating, and Charitable Exercise – ‘Tis the Holiday Season!

It’s hard to believe that Thanksgiving is really next week; it seems like just yesterday we were telling you about all the fun summer activities to be enjoyed in San Diego. Once you have done all the Thanksgiving dinner dishes, it will officially be “holiday season” in San Diego, (though, we’re sure you’ve noticed that several retailers have had their holiday decorations out since the day after Halloween!) We tried to hold off on our excited holiday posts, but we could only wait so long... Here is our first round of fun holiday activities to enjoy with your family in San Diego!

november 18-24

Get your family in the holiday spirit with a live performance of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas at The Old Globe. The classic musical is based on Dr. Seuss’ timeless book and this year marks the 14th anniversary of “The Grinch” being performed at the Old Globe. You and your family will recognize famous songs like “This Time of Year,” “Santa for a Day” and “Fah Who Doraze,” the carol from the animated version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, starring Jim Carrey. Get your holidays season started off right at the Old Globe as it is once again transformed into the snow-covered town of Whoville. Ticket prices range from $24-$57 and can be purchased online or at the box office.

The outdoor skating rink at Horton Plaza is now officially open for the Holiday season. Fantasy On Ice is a seasonal outdoor ice skating rink that benefits Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego. This year’s season will run from November 17th - January 8th with public skating sessions Monday through Thursday, from 10am-10pm, and on weekends from 10am-7:30pm. Prices range from $12 for children under the age of 12, to $14 for adults and includes the rental of the skates. For reservations, you can email or call 858-530-1825. You can also get more info on their Twitter page or Facebook page.

Why not walk off (or run) all the calories you will consume at Thanksgiving dinner before you even sit down at the table? Father Joe's Thanksgiving Day 5K Run/Walk will be taking place Thursday, November 24th at 8am in Balboa Park. The first 12,000 people to register will receive a commemorative race T-shirt and a timing chip for only $3, so hurry up and register! Pre-registration will take place at the Balboa Park Organ Pavilion on Wednesday November 23rd, from 2-6 pm, as well as at 6:30 am on Thanksgiving Day before the race. A free continental breakfast will be provided to the participants as well as a free beer garden with entertainment by the Bill Magee Blues band. Gobble Gobble!
