It's that time of year again, Comic Con 2011 has returned to the San Diego Convention Center, the home of the largest comic book and popular arts convention in the world! The first "Con" was held in 1970 and only featured comic books, science fiction, fantasy and film and television. Now the convention has expanded to include a much larger range of pop culture elements, such as horror, animation, anime, manga, toys, collectible card games, video games, webcomics, and fantasy novels. Last year, the San Diego Convention Center was filled to capacity with over 130,000 attendees. The exhibit hall hours are as follows: Wednesday, July 20th, (Preview Night) 6:00 PM-9:00 PM, Thursday, July 21st, 9:30 am-7:00 pm, Friday, July 22nd, 9:30 am-7:00 pm, Saturday, July 23rd, 9:30 am-7:00 pm, & Sunday, July 24th, 9:30 am-5:00 pm.
The Del Mar Summer Concert Series kicks off this Friday, July 22nd, with a performance from G Love & Special Sauce. The concert is free with racetrack admission or $20 without. Del Mar began the Summer Concert Series in 1994 and since then, has featured performances from artists like Cake, Weezer, ZZ Top, Billy Idol, Gnarls Barkley, Ziggy Marley, Jason Mraz and Jack Johnson. This year's lineup will include: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Bravery, Jimmy Eat World, and the Airborne Toxic Event. This year, Del Mar is debuting their brand new Seaside Stage, an improved venue that offers better sight lines, the Pacific Ocean as a backdrop, and better access to concert-goer services and amenities. The concert will start immediately after the races and there are no reserved seats - it's standing room only - so, be sure to get there early.
If you are looking for some fun in the sun this Sunday, why not enjoy a scenic walk or run around the Carlsbad lagoons? The Carlsbad Lagoon Day Fun Walk/Run event will feature live music, a costume contest for the kids, and a bar-be-que lunch. All proceeds will go towards preserving the lagoons. You can choose between three lagoons for your walk or run: The Agua Hedionda Lagoon route is 2 miles long and begins at the corner of Cannon Road and Carlsbad Boulevard at 11am. You can register for this route between 8:30-10:30am; The Batiquitos Lagoon route is 6 miles long and starts at 10:30am, with registration starting at 7:30am; Or choose the Buena Vista Lagoon route, which is 5 miles long. This route starts at 10am and you can register between 8-10am. All three routes will end at the Lagoon Discovery Center, where the bar-be-que will be held. Dress up as a "lagoon critter", such as a bird or fish, and enter for a chance to win a K1 Speed Party Pack for 8 and Lego Land tickets!
